There is a stretch of highway somewhere between where you started and Yellowstone where the radio becomes static and your thoughts get louder. That is usually when the trip starts to feel real.
I travel for photographs as much as destinations. Light on ridgelines, animals that ignore you, towns that close early. The best frames are rarely the ones planned from a lookout pullout — they appear when you have already stopped expecting anything.
Long drives also reset the pace of everything else. Emails wait. Projects wait. The map becomes the only urgent thing. For a few days, that is enough.
I keep coming back to the West for that reason. Not because it is exotic, but because it makes ordinary attention feel valuable again.
